If you don't know "JACK", maybe you should. "JACK" has
been the most talked about format in Canada since the
spring ratings were released a few weeks ago. "JACK"
has taken Vancouver by storm (market population 1.8
million persons age 12+) debuting number one with
Adults 18-34 and 25-54 and blowing the established
market leaders away. In fact, nearly every Vancouver
music station lost audience to "JACK".
But what is JACK? Is it the next generation's oldies
format, a new classic hits format, or is JACK a gold-
based AC? JACK's music is unlike any format you heard
before. JACK is variety. JACK is fun. JACK is irreverent.
And JACK is unique. While most other radio stations
today are conservative, predictable and boring, JACK
has broken the mold with a fresh new approach:
incredible music variety and lots of fun. And Vancouver
radio listeners are responding in droves.

| JACK'S IMAGING |
 |
|
Here's a sample of the type of positioners and imaging
you'll hear on JACK. - "If this were the lottery, you'd
hit the JACKpot!" - "You seriously think we'd stop now?
You don't know JACK!" "Would you listen to a station
named Gertrude?"
JACK may just be on to something with a type of
creative, off-the-cuff, highly differentiated position,
coupled with real music variety. This may (or may not)
prove to be just what listeners want in an already,
overly-crowded arena in which all stations sounds the
same!
|
| JACK CASH CALL |
 |
JACK has also created excitement with a market-wide
buzz that encourages listeners to answer their
telephones, "I Listen to JACK". Then If
JACK calls they win $1,000.00
Will the format be able to maintain the attitude and
music variety over the long-term and still be able to
build ratings? The industry will be watching -- and
listening!

| "PLAYING WHAT WE WANT" |
 |
|
While JACK's competitors claim to be
playing "Continuous Country Favorites", "The Best Mix
of this and that" and "Great Oldies" (60's based oldies in
Canada are heard only on AM stations), JACK's music
positioner is "Playing What We Want" and JACK plays a
wide variety of music from the 70's, 80's, 90's and even
includes the occasional recurrent and current from
today.
A recent nine-day monitor revealed that JACK played a
total 958 different songs, more than double the amount
of songs heard on most Vancouver music stations. Only
one song received more than 10 spins during the 9-day
monitor. With over 900 active songs, four decades of
music, and such few spins, is it any wonder why most
programmers are surprised by Jack's success?
While JACK is the current rage in Vancouver, 99.9 BOB
FM in Winnipeg, Canada launched a similar format in
January 2002 and have dominated the ratings in
Winnipeg ever since. 99.9 BOB plays "80s, 90s and
Whatever" and Bob's imaging and marketing phrases
include "Highly Addictive" and "Turn your knob to BOB".
In the recent Winnipeg ratings BOB is still #1 25-54
maintaining its impressive 16.1 share.
